Perimenopausal Mental Health: My Journey

We’re delighted to share this powerful guest post from Lesley Salem, founder of Over The Bloody Moon, who supports women experiencing perimenopausal symptoms such as anxiety and depression. You can follow Lesley on Instagram at @overthebloodymoon.

The Trigger

Two years ago, aged 46, I came off the pill after being on it for more than three decades (apart from breaks to conceive our three daughters). My periods were still regular and light - but soon other symptoms crept in: night sweats, palpitations, nausea, headaches, weight gain, and fatigue.

At the same time, I started a new job, and my confidence plummeted. I became anxious, tearful, and withdrawn. By summer, I felt like I was slipping away from the life I’d once enjoyed.

Not Joining the Dots

After several visits to my GP, I was told I was likely perimenopausal and offered HRT. But I was paralysed by fear of breast cancer. Instead, I spiralled further. Work pressures mounted, I handed in my notice, and I felt unemployable and disconnected from my family.

Volunteering at a local Dementia Café with Alzheimer’s Society became my lifeline. Those two hours of purpose each week transformed my mood and gave me connection again.

Rock Bottom

I tried antidepressants, but they left me foggy and disconnected. When I realised my reflexes had slowed dangerously, I weaned myself off them. Instead, I leaned into lifestyle changes: exercise, cutting caffeine and alcohol, and eating more healthily. Slowly, I began to feel stronger.

The Road to Recovery

Determined to help other women, I launched Over The Bloody Moon. Our services include:

  • Classes and coaching

  • Self-care toolkits

  • Digital resources and expert-led Masterclasses

  • Workshops for women, their families, and colleagues

  • Community support through Facebook and Instagram

We’ve built The House, a digital platform with curated resources, and created wellness experiences with laughter therapy, aromatherapy, CBT-based hypnotherapy, and mindfulness.

Reflections

What I underestimated was the toll of perimenopause on my mental health. Long before physical symptoms, my emotional wellbeing had started to fray.

Tools like mindfulness, breathing exercises, essential oils, volunteering, and nutrition have been transformative. Cutting caffeine and alcohol has cured years of insomnia and anxiety. And most of all, community - family, friends, and supportive networks - has given me strength.

I’m glad that apps like Luma (formerly WorryTree) now exist. Having accessible tools to manage anxious thoughts and worry habits can make a huge difference when symptoms feel overwhelming.
